Summer Job Hunting Tips

June 28th, 2012

Candidates on the lookout for jobs this summer may just find what they are looking for, but to do so, they have to be creative and ready to prove themselves. If the lazy days of summer are no longer holding your interest, it is a good idea to put the job searching skills to the test. How will you do it?

Is It Worth It?

There is no doubt that searching for a job during the summer months is more difficult than other times of the year. People are vacationing and not buying as much. Companies often have scheduled time off during this season, too. However, by the time summer is over, those who are searching for jobs will be rolling up their sleeves in an effort to find work. In other words, if you want to beat the competition, now is definitely the time to submit applications.

Tips for Success

To be successful at a summer time job search, candidates need to be organized and ready to respond to any type of offer out there. Now is the time to be passionate.

  • Work on building your network now. Many employers have more time during the summer months and are more likely to work on widening their network now rather than later.
  • A simple way to add more people to your network is to simple talk to more people. Help the neighbor. Help at the school’s festival. Doing so could open the door for new opportunities. The more you are seen, the more your network can grow.
  • Find the local job fair and visit it. Often, job fairs pop up during the summer months. Visit these to get your resume in the hands of new employers.
  • Be proactive. However, you may be a pro at answering ads for jobs, pick up the phone, and make a few cold calls, too. If there is a business you would like to work with, find out if they are hiring by actually calling the HR department. Do not wait for an ad to show up. The more proactive you are, the more likely you are to find a job. Summer is a great time to do this since many companies are looking for help for the upcoming busy season.
  • Do some volunteer work now, too. Volunteering can help you to network and it can add to your resume, too. Do not overlook even those small opportunities with big organizations.

Summer job searches can be very successful. For that to occur, though, you have to be actively looking for work. The more unique you are in finding employment, and the more proactive you are about approaching companies, the more likely it will be for you to find the type of employment right for your needs.
