Help Your Employees Boost Productivity

January 24th, 2020

With all of the technological developments of how to tell time and track how we spend our time, we still have only 24 hours in a day. It comes as no surprise, then, that productivity is a prized attribute in the business world. As a manager, one of your biggest concerns is how to boost productivity because, at the end of the day, time is money and money is time.

Unfortunately, some of the ways that workers try to boost productivity are misguided. These mistakes in productivity practices could be bad habits or misconceptions, but it’s time to make 2020 a year of higher productivity and better job performance.

Productivity Tips to Help Your Employees

These tips are proven to improve performance in the workplace.

Encourage Better Breaks

Sometimes when employees face a fast-approaching deadline, they decide to “power through” by skipping lunch breaks, coffee breaks, or even cutting time with family in the evenings. Unfortunately, while this may seem to be the best way to meet a deadline, it’s counterproductive and damaging to the quality of their work.

Instead, encourage power breaks. These breaks can include a walk outside to recharge. Stepping away from their work will allow your employees to get a natural burst of energy. Coming back to work, your employees can approach their work with a fresh perspective.

Fight Back Against Procrastination

Procrastination can be a temptation for many. Some workers are perfectionists, so instead of doing good work on time or early, they get stuck trying to be perfect and risk not finishing at all. Others are intimidated by something challenging and may delay their work out of fear. Still, others may procrastinate out of not being challenged enough, and they become unmotivated. Whatever the reason, procrastination is the opposite of productivity.

To fight back the urge to procrastinate on a particular project, teach your employees how to schedule their days effectively. Difficult and challenging work should be done first thing in the morning. Getting this work right away will make them feel even more productive, which can boost their productivity all day long.

Foster Collaboration

A lot of professionals feel like they can do it all on their own. But actually, some of the best work is done in duos or teams. This dynamic tends to make work more enjoyable and therefore turns up productivity. Collaboration also allows for more creative thinking and problem-solving, which can be very useful when tackling something new.

Top 5 Resolutions for Job Seekers

January 9th, 2020

As the new year begins, many job seekers find a boost in motivation to amp up their search for their next job. It’s not unusual for people to start a new year with a goal of finding a better job, but with a new year, should come a fresh start.  To be successful and make the most of this job-seeking energy kick, you should focus on these top resolutions for your search.

Consider these five resolutions to help you find a great job as you start the new year.

Revisit Your Resume & Cover Letter

Hopefully, after a refreshing holiday break, you can revisit your resume and cover letter with fresh eyes and a fresh outlook. First of all, be sure you update it with any new job experience, accomplishments, and skills, Be sure to use active language that engages recruiters and also include hard numbers when applicable. While you will tailor these documents slightly for each position to apply to, it’s essential to have an updated base version that serves as a solid foundation for you in your job search.

To have a professional review your resume and cover letter, you can always contact a staffing agency or career professional.

Evaluate Your Online Presence

Searching for a job in 2020 (like recent years) is much different than several years prior. Your online presence is actually just as important as that resume and cover letter you worked so hard to update! Be sure to update your LinkedIn profile to reflect your resume. You will also want to consider your other social media profiles, like Facebook, Instagram, etc. While these platforms do not share the same purpose as LinkedIn or a professional blog that you may have, they are still scoured by recruiters and hiring managers, so clean up your content if it doesn’t portray you in a responsible, professional, or likable manner.

Learn New Skills & Volunteer

It’s essential to continue to grow as a person and a professional with each year. So, what better time to add new skills and experience to your resume than the start of a new year? Whether you take a class or become certified in a new skill, or look to serving your community, these are all great ways to become a better person while also boosting your resume. These experiences and new skills may be just what you need to become qualified for your dream job.

Network

To be considered for new opportunities, or to know about new job openings, you need to put in the effort to network and build your brand. You can network on LinkedIn or other professional sites, but you should also get connected to your local professional networks. Building your own brand and reputation will take effort, but it’s definitely worth it! Not only might you find a job that can catapult your career, but you may make lifelong friends and colleagues along the way who will enrich your life even more.

Focus on the Job You Want

Once you determine the type of job you want, stay focused on that goal of working at that job. Maybe you want to work at a specific company, or perhaps you just want to get a promotion to a new position at any company. Whatever the goal for you, stay focused and do something every day to achieve that dream. Create a reminder on your phone, or a note on your computer as a simple reminder of why you are working so hard, staying focused, and not giving up.
