How to be More Confident Going into Your Interview

February 6th, 2020

If you’ve got a big job interview coming up, you’ve probably been experiencing some level of anxiety as you look forward to this important day. Interviews are a big deal and a major factor in getting a job offer, so it’s natural to feel some amount of stress. In fact, it’s healthy to have a little bit of this unease as it can keep you sharp and more aware.

But too much stress and anxiety can wreak havoc on your interview performance, which could lead to the dreaded rejection email.

Boost Your Confidence at a Job Interview with These 4 Tips

Let your strengths and qualifications shine instead of nerves. Follow these four pieces of advice to be confident, calm, and professional for your next interview.

Be prepared

Preparation is key to a good interview and will help boost your confidence. There are a variety of ways to be prepared for your interview, and each approach will help you overcome extra stress.

  • Do your homework on the company and position. Know everything you can know about the company, who works there, and the position’s role. This will also be a key step for when you develop questions to ask your interviewer.
  • Print out extra copies of your resume, pack a notepad, writing utensil, and a list of references. These are the basic materials that you should have for your interview. Print out enough copies of your resume for everyone you may be interviewing with as well as one for yourself to look at as a reference as you answer questions.
  • Practice your responses to interview questions so you can feel more prepared for your interview. This will help you have buttoned-up yet natural responses, making sure you give your best answers.

Accentuate the Positives

If you are too stressed for a job interview, you can fall into a destructive trap of cynicism and bitterness, because you are thinking of everything that can go wrong. Be sure to focus on the positive opportunities and possible outcomes so you can stay confident and upbeat during your interview. Having a positive outlook will also help you recall your responses clearly and stay focused.

Practice Relaxation & Confidence Boosters

The morning of your interview, and even right before you get to the location, take some time to practice relaxation and confidence-boosting techniques. An easy way to feel calm is to take long, slow breaths in, and slowly exhale as well.

Experts also suggest using the power pose for at least two minutes before leaving for your job interview. Posing like a superhero for two minutes is said to boost confidence.

Realize You are Not Desperate

Before heading into your interview, be sure you remind yourself that this interview is not your last chance for success. Even though the job looks great on paper, the interview is a good chance for you to also understand if this company will help you achieve your career goals.

You need to stay focused on the interview and not caught up in desperation. If you come across as needy, that will not do you any benefit to getting the job.

Even a bad interview is a great learning experience, so there is something positive in every interview. However, understanding that you are not desperate can help you perform well in your interview and even get a job offer.

No Tricks, Just Treats – Find Confidence in Starting a New Job

October 23rd, 2019

Starting a new job is quite exciting. But it can also be incredibly nerve-wracking. After all, you don’t know anyone at this new company, you don’t know how things are done, you might only have a slight idea about their office culture, and even the office layout is new to you. It’s no surprise that you may feel some new job jitters.

3 Tips to Boost Your Confidence When Starting a New Job

No matter how unsure you may be on your first day, here are some important tips to boost your confidence so you can push fears aside and focus on success.

Relax

Before you enter the new workplace, you need to take a few minutes to relax. Put your body and mind at ease so you don’t come across as short or tense to your new coworkers. Maybe you listen to your favorite music or podcast on the commute. You could wake up extra early to read a book or get in a workout. These are all different ways to help you relax so when you get to your new job, it’s a lot easier to roll your shoulders back, take a deep breath and walk in with a confident smile.

Remember WHY You’re There

Sometimes the fears and jitters of starting a new job can make you feel completely inadequate to step into your new role. Fight the urge to be unsure of yourself and remember why you are there. You were chosen out of many candidates to perform successfully at this job. It’s important to also remember that your managers don’t expect you to be perfect right away, either. They are looking forward to helping you succeed in this position and they are confident that you will flourish here.

Another important idea to remember is why you are excited to start this new gig. This job will help propel you in your career. The idea of starting a new job that will help you achieve your goals is extremely motivating.

Normalize New

Starting anything that is new will automatically wire you to be a little bit, or even a lot, nervous. It’s how your brain is wired to respond. So, instead of getting too wrapped up in your new job anxiety and fears, understand that all these new experiences at your new job will quickly pass. The less power and fear you give to things being new, the faster your fears will fade and be replaced with professional confidence.
